Christ: A Healthy Obsession.
by Nick Bishop
We have all susccumbed to obsession, whether we like to admit it or not, there is of course, a world of difference between an unhealthy and worldy obsession and a healthy spiritual pursuit of God through faith in Christ. As Christians, being passionate about the Lord Jesus Christ is to be commended. After all, He is the only one who is worthy of praise.
When Christ was on earth, everyone from the humble shepherd to the authorities of the day were fasinated and obsessed with Christ. Some because they were genuinely looking for God and believing He was (and is) the Messiah. Others had seen His actions and words and they knew who He was, while others wanted him out of the way because he was a threat to their authority and their hypocrisy.
Jesus was murdered for the obsession of his enemies who wanted to kill him for everything he reprsented. We thank God, however, that Christ arose and ascended into Heaven and will come again to receive his people to himself and grant them eternal life with Him!
Jesus has become the biggest obsession the world has ever known, yet many do not follow Him. Why is this? Well, among other reasons, the unhealthy obsessions of this age blind people from Christ. Satan certainly has more than a hand in these worldy obsessions, and he will use our unhealthy obsessions to trap us and make our obsessions our prison. These earthly obsessions, whatever, they may be, remain on our minds to the detriment of ourselves and those around us. Whether it is an obsession with food, alcohol, drugs, work, excercise, a celeb, et al. All of these obsessions may seem harmless at the time, but in the end, they will leave you broken and disappointed.
Celeb obsession is one of the most dangerous today. Celebs whether they are actors, musicians, or sports stars are easy to follow on Facebook, Tiktok, Twitter, etc. Fans hang on every word these people say, every event they do, and even worship images of them. And while it is okay to follow celebs you should not put them on a pedestal as if they were a god. The Bible clearly warns us about worshipping false idols and unfortunately, some fans do this. This leads us away from God, and that is a bad place to be in. Turning people into gods and worshipping them happened in Roman times and sadly, it’s still going on today.
Obsesson with our electronic devices is another feature of the world today. Everywhere you go you see people staring at their phones lest they miss a message from some person they follow. Again, this can be the devil’s tool as he is using this tech to distract us from the real world around us. Of course, tech can be a good thing in health, work, communication, etc, but it’s how much you choose to engage with it. We should allow ourselves some time away from our screen and have a healthy relationship wth our device.
Obsession with a celeb or whatever is defined as a recognised illness. In a world where authoritarian regimes exist like North Korea Kim Jong-un is treated and worshipped as a god. No doubt, much of the North Korean population may be obsessed with this demonic man, believing he will sort out their problems for them. While others know they are living in a dictatorship and yet can do very little to resist. So the cult of the leader is forced upon people whether they like it or not.
So for thought, I will add scripture from Isaiah 2:22: “Stop trusting man, He cannot help you. He has only a little while. What good is he”?
God bless you,
