False Faith or Fulfilling Faith: Your Choice.

The online Oxford Dictionary defines faith as: ‘Great trust or confidence in something or someone’.  The word faith is usually taken to be a belief system, however, it has other meanings.  For example, faith can be in your football team, your hoped for-pay-rise, hoping to get into university, that new job, a new car, trust in your spouse, in your doctor, in money, etc.  So faith has a very worldly interpretation too.  People today often put their faith in things that have little or no spiritual significance.  This kind of faith is based on futile things because its foundation is not in Christ and has no spiritual foundation.

Many people today are looking for quick fixes to their problems and find themselves trapped because they have faith in the things of this world.  These are only temporal and often dangerous.

Humanism and atheism teach people to have faith in man and his proven knowledge (science).  Where humans elevate themselves like the gods, with power over their earthly destiny and naive confidence, even arrogance, that things will soon come good for humanity.  While people indeed make things better, and intelligent people can solve some of the problems we face, the lack of faith in the God of the Bible has paved the way for Humanism and Atheism to voice its false gospel of human self-sufficiency and progress.

Whether it be the threat of pandemics, human overpopulation, the decimation of species, climate change, or the great rift between rich and poor, etc, without faith in Christ, humanity is devoid of the light by which they would see that mankind is lost without faith and hope in the God of the Bible.

The belief in the greatness of man and the banishment of God in a secular society has led to despair.   Where there is no respect for the Creator or belief in Him, and we have little respect for our fellow humans, we have abused this life and the wonderful planet we have been given.

Coming to religious faith, Christianity still remains the largest belief system in the world, at approximately 2.4 billion followers, with Islam coming second at 1.9 billion.  So, despite the fact that our faith is coming under attack from various quarters (secularism, even other faiths, etc) we are still standing among the 7.8 billion people on this planet.  Christ said He would build a church and the gates of hell would not prevail against it.  History testifies to this truth.

We are all familiar with the census forms when they ask you if you part of a religious faith.  Bizarrely, some have identified themselves as ‘Jedi’, because they have beliefs based on the notion of the Jedi Knights from ‘Star Wars’.  Jediism, believe it or not, tried to get itself registered as an official religion in the UK, but it failed.  More disturbingly, in the United States, there is an official ‘Church of Satan’, where many adherents of this belief system worship Lucifer as a God.  As Satan is referred to in the Bible as “The god of this world”, we shouldn’t be surprised.  The world we see around us is largely under the shadow of his influence and power.  But thanks be to God through Christ, we know from the book of Revelation, his reign will not last forever!  Indeed, Jesus has already defeated him, through his death and resurrection!  The very evil we see in the world is Satan’s last stand!  The Bible teaches clearly that Jesus will soon return, and the arch-enemy of God, Satan, will be suitably dealt with, once and for all.

So finally, as Christians, in a world of faith in ungodly things, we must strive to promote and tell the wonderful good news of Jesus Christ and to show in a world of darkness, there is a faith and way of life in Christ, that has been tested over and over again.  It is this transformative faith delivered through the presence and teaching of Jesus Christ that will bring meaning in a meaningless world.

Matt 21:22 “And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith”.

Hebrews 11 “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.  And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him”.

Luke 1:37 “For nothing will be impossible”.

God bless you x.

Nick.
