Jesus and the Jedi!

Jesus and the Jedi!

Human beings love a good story of light v darkness and where good overcomes evil.  Sci-fi fantasies like Star Wars contain all that and more.

When the movie ‘Star Wars’ opened in 1977 did George Lucas imagine that his creation would become a global phenomenon?  With the release of the latest movie in the saga ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, the success of the ongoing galactic adventure is assured.  The franchise has had and continues to have a truly worldwide impact when it comes to technology, economics and culture.

Similarities between the Bible and the Star Wars narrative have been noted by Christians and non-Christians alike.   Obi-Wan Kenobi described the Force as an energy field that is created by all living beings.  It surrounds and penetrates all and binds the galaxy together.  Paul describes a God who is a father of all and exists in everyone.  The Lord Jesus Christ binds all of creation together.

Prayer, serenity and meditation are themes running throughout the Bible as they are in Star Wars.  In the Old Testament, we find David using prayer in his quiet times with God.  As Jesus faced trials of one sort or another in the New Testament he often withdrew to spend time in prayer and meditation with his father. In the ‘Phantom Menace,’ Qui Gon Jinn used all of the above spiritual actions in his light sabre duel with Darth Maul.

Some have wrongly equated the Force with God as one and the same thing.  At first, it is easy to see why but the differences are very obvious for Christians.  God is the creator and sustainer of all things and you can have a loving and personal relationship with him through his son Jesus Christ.  The Force, on the other hand, is an impersonal energy field to be used for both good and evil in the Star Wars movies. As Christians, we share something in common with the fictional Jedi in that we stand against the powers of darkness.  This is a sentiment and a call to right action spiritually for the Jedi and for Christians in the Bible Ephesians 6:12.

So go see the latest Star Wars movie and enjoy!
