Kat Von D: A Journey to Faith.

by Nick Bishop
Kat Von D or Katherine Von Drachensberg was born in Mexico in 1982. She came to the US as a child of 8 years old. She rose to prominence as a Goth icon and tattooist in the programme ‘Miami Ink’. Later she had her show entitled ‘L A Ink’. These two programmes showed her interaction with the different guests who came into these tattoo parlours.
Kat Von D is known for activism. She has campaigned tirelessly for animal rights and brought out a range of beauty products not tested on animals. She has also fought on related environmental issues. Kat was a declared witch and admitted she was fascinated by the macabre.
Kat is married and has several children. Kat remains a vibrant force in art and fashion and has released books and music. One thing that happened to her though that surprised everyone, even her fans, was her conversion to Christianity.
Kat said she could not get over how fans, when she went to a restuarant, came over and wished her well. Some even hugged her and she felt the genuine warmth of these people. Kat began to question her life on all fronts and most importantly of all, spiritually!
It was then she realized she needed Jesus Christ in her life. So she was baptised in her local Baptist church and this ceremony can be seen on social media. Kat realized that there was indeed a real battle going on between darkness and light, good and evil. Kat now attends the Switzerland Baptist church alongside her family, Goth friends and members of the congregation.
She regularly posts videos of herself singing with the choir in the Switizerland Baptist Church on social media. When you see her dressed in black standing with women that look so prim and proper, it looks odd. However, it’s not what she looks like or how they look, it’s what is in their hearts that matters. Just as Jesus never judged anyone on how they looked we must be the same. We are told over and over again in scripture not to judge what people look like as Jesus tells us Matt 7-15-20:
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown onto the fire. Therefore, by their fruits, you will lnow them”.
Kat says she realizes that many of her Pagan fans will be shocked by her conversion. But she says that is for them to disgest and whatever their thoughts about her, she prays for them.
Kat admits that many Christians because of the way she dressed thought she was of the Devil. And certainly, at the time, she admits herself her life was in a dark place. Now she has given her life to Christ she can serve as an icon to the Goth community to find peace and salvation in Jesus Christ. That’s not to say there aren’t Christians already in this community.
So, finally let us hold up people like Kat Von D that their journey with Christ will be a blessing not only to them but to all those who follow her. Jesus welcomed/welcomes all into His fold, even Goths! So, the next time someone walks into your church and they happen to look a little different, welcome them as Jesus does. You never know, God may have sent this person to test us and so, we must act accordingly as Jesus did.
God bless you.
