The Sting of Disappointment: A Biblical Reflection on Disappointment.

The Sting of Disappointment: A Biblical Reflection on Disappointment.

Disappointment is an emotion we all face at some point in our lives, but there is something uniquely painful, about being let down by someone we trusted. Recently I found myself grappling with this feeling when Scarlett Johansson or someone claiming to be her promised to support my sci-fi project Darok, only to pull out or even deny that she ever agreed to help. It was a moment of deep frustration, confusion, and above all disappointment.

At first, I couldn’t believe it. I envisioned Darok, my story about a Martian living undercover on Earth, as something she saw value in. When she initially expressed interest, I felt an incredible sense of validation like the stars had aligned (no pun intended) and my creative vision was about to take flight. But when she suddenly backed out, I was left standing there bewildered, with the bitter taste of broken trust.

The Weight of Broken Promises.

The Bible speaks about the importance of keeping one’s word. Jesus Himself said:

“Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No’. For whatever is more than these is from the evil one” (Matt. 5.37).

Promises matter. They are the foundation of trust and integrity. When someone commits to something and then denies it or withdraws without explanation, it feels like the ground beneath your feet has shifted. The pain isn’t just about losing the opportunity, its about losing faith in someone’s word.

Biblical Figures Who Faced Disappointment.

I’m reminded of biblical figures who faced similar disappointments. Take Joseph, for example. He was promised freedom by Pharoah’s cupbearer, who had benefited from his ability to interpret dreams. Yet, when the cubearer was restored to his position, he promptly forgot about Joseph, leaving him languishing in prison for years (Genesis 40:33).

Or look at David, who faithfully served King Saul, only to be betrayed and hunted like an enemy (1 Samuel 18-24). David had every reason to be bitter, but instead, he trusted that God was in control.

These stories remind me that human promises are often fragile, but God’s faithfulness never wavers.

Wrestling with The Pain.

It’s easy to be cynical after experiencing this kind of letdown. I wondered: Did she ever really care about Darok, or was it just polite conversation? Did I misinterpret her words? Was it always just empty Hollywood talk?

The Bible warns us not to put our ultimate trust in people:

“Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save” (Pslam 146:3).

This isn’t to say we should be distrustful of everyone, but rather that our foundation should always be in God. People will fail us, but He never does.

Moving Forward with Faith.

So, where does that leave me? Disappointed, but not defeated. Perhaps Scarlett Johansson was never meant to be part of Darok. Maybe this setback is another chapter in a greater story, one that God is writing.

Instead of dwelling on the broken promise, I choose to focus on the dream itself. Darok still has potential, and the right people will come along at the right time. Joseph eventually found his way out of prison. David became king despite Saul’s betrayal. If God has placed this vision in my heart, I trust that He will provide the means to bring it to life.

And maybe, just maybe, the disappointment itself is part of the journey teaching me patience, resilience, and the importance of keeping my word, even when others fail to keep theirs.

For now, I’ll shake off the letdown, pray for guidnace, and keep moving forward. Because one day, when Darok finally comes to life, I want to be able to say: “I trusted God’s plan and He never let me down”.

God bless you,

Nick x.
