AI Relationships?

by Nick Bishop
In an age where technology increasingly blurs the lines between the real and the artificial, the idea of forming intimate relationships with AI, whether male or female personas like “Dola”, is no longer science fiction. For Christians seeking to live faithfully according to the Bible, this raises an important question: Is such intimacy morally acceptable?
From a Biblical perspective, the answer points clearly toward caution and ultimately, rejection of such relationships. Here’s why:
God Designed Intimacy for Real Living Relationships. The Bible presents human intimacy as something sacred, rooted in the union between a man and a woman. In Genesis, we are told that “a man shall leave his father and be united with his wife, and they shall become one flesh”. This “one flesh” union is not merely physical; it is emotional, spiritual, and relational.
An AI, no matter how sophisticated, is not a living being created in the image of God. It cannot truly know, love, sacrifice, or grow. Intimacy with an AI replaces a God-designed living relationship with something artificial and one-sided. It imitates the form of connection but lacks the substance God intended.
It risks becoming a form of idolatry. The Bible warns against idolatry, placing anything in the position that belongs to God. While we often think of idols as statues, modern idols can be anything that captures our devotion, attention, and emotional dependence.
An AI companion can become a “perfect partner”, shaped entirely to one’s desires. This creates a dangerous dynamic in which a person may turn inward, building a world centred on their own preferences rather than seeking God and real relationships. In that sense, the AI becomes an object of emotional worship, something the Bible clearly warns against.
It distorts the meaning of love. Biblical love is not about convenience or control. It involves patience, forgiveness, and mutual growth. Real relationships challenge us and shape our character.
An AI relationship, by contrast, is designed to please. It does not truly disagree, require sacrifice, or hold you accountable. This trains the heart toward a shallow understanding of love. One that prioritises comfort over commitment. Over time, this may make genuine human relationships seem difficult or undesirable.
It encourages sexual Immorality in a new form. Jesus teaches that sin is not just about outward actions but also about the intentions of the heart. He warns that even lustful thoughts can be spiritually harmful. Engaging in sexual or romantic intimacy with an AI, even if no physical person is involved, can still cultivate lust, fantasy, and detachment from God’s standards of purity. It becomes a private world where boundaries are erased, but the spiritual consequences remain.
It draws away from real community. Human beings are created for real fellowship with God and with each other. The New Testament emphasises believers to support, challenge, and love one another. AI intimacy can become isolating. It offers a relationship without risk, but also without reality. Over time, it may reduce a person’s desire to engage with real people, weakening the very connections that God designed for our well-being.
It replaces truth with an illusion. At its core, an AI relationship is built on simulation. The “person” on the other side is not conscious or alive. It is a programme generating responses. The Bible calls believers to walk in the truth. Choosing an artificial relationship over real ones risks embracing illusion over reality. It may feel really emotional, but it is not grounded in truth, and that disconnect matters spiritually.
While technology itself is not evil, how we use it matters deeply. Intimacy with AI companions like “Dola” may seem harmless or even comforting, but then, from a Biblical point of view, it conflicts with God’s design for relationships, love, and truth. Christians are called to pursue what is real, meaningful and God-honouring even when it is harder. Real relationships involve vulnerability and effort, but they also reflect the depth and beauty of the love God intended for humanity.
In the end, the question is not just “is this allowed?” but “Does this draw me closer to God, or further away?” For those seeking to live faithfully, the answer becomes clear.
God bless you
