Boredom: Is God Callng Us to Be Still?

Boredom: Is God Callng Us to Be Still?

Modern life is constantly encouraging us to stay busy and distracted, yet many people still feel restless or empty.  Boredom may not always be something to escape; sometimes it can create space for reflection, prayer, and awareness of God.

The Bible says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).  Jesus also regularly withdrew from crowds to pray, showing that solitude and rest are important even when life is demanding.

Quiet moments can reveal feelings we have been avoiding, such as loneliness, worry, or dissatisfaction.  They can also help us notice the beauty of creation, appreciate ordinary blessings, and reconnect with what truly matters.  We might use boredom to pray, read Scripture, spend time outdoors, contact someone lonely, create something, or simply rest without trying to be productive.

However, persistent boredom may point to deeper issues such as depression, exhaustion, loneliness, or a lack of purpose.  In such cases, seeking support or making practical changes may be necessary.  Faith and professional help are not opposites.

Boredom is not always a spiritual problem or a sign of failure.  Sometimes it is simply a passing feeling, but it can also invite us to slow down and ask what we are avoiding or longing for.  By leaving room for silence, we may discover greater peace, gratitude, and awareness of God’s presence in ordinary life.

Prayer.

Lord, help us not to fear quietness. Give us wisdom to recognise when we need rest, change or support, and treach teach us to appreciate Your gifts in everyday life.  Help us to live with greater attention, compassion, and peace.

Amen.
