The Spiritual Art of Not Knowing.

by Nick Bishop
We live in a world that demands answers. We want certainty, reassurance, and control over what tomorrow may bring. Yet life doesn’t always give us the answers we seek. Sometimes, we face unanswered questions, uncertain futures, and paths we cannot see clearly, and that’s okay.
Faith isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about learning to trust God when we don’t.
Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord rather than lean on our own understanding. We don’t have to solve every mystery, understand every situation, or know exactly where life is taking us. We are human, and our understanding will always have its limits.
Jesus reminds us not to worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will have its own concerns. This isn’t a promise that life will always be easy, but an invitation to stop allowing tomorrow’s uncertainties to steal today’s peace.
We can have questions and still have faith. We can experience doubt without losing hope. We can admit that we don’t understand what is happening and still believe that God has not abandoned us.
Perhaps the spiritual art of not knowing is learning to release our desperate need for control. It is discovering a peace that doesn’t require us to manage everything, and trust that doesn’t depend on seeing the entire path.
Sometimes, faith means taking a step when we cannot see the whole road. Sometimes, it means waiting patiently, praying honestly, and resting in the knowledge that we are not expected to have everything figured out.
You don’t need all the answers today. You don’t need to see the whole journey. You simply need the courage to take the next step.
The future may remain uncertain, but uncertainty doesn’t have to mean fear. With faith, we can face the unknown with hope, meet today with gratitude, and trust God even when the bigger picture remains hidden.
Perhaps that’s where faith grows deepest: not when everything becomes clear, but when we discover that we can live peacefully while some things remain beyond our understanding.
God bless you.
