Education, Education, Education!

Education, Education, Education!

Education is a critical and necessary tool for us to make our way in the world. One remembers Tony Blair’s mantra: ‘Education, education, education! With the help of school, college/university it is a pre-requisite before going on to get a job. Even apprenticeship requires learning and mentorship.

Some of us go back to education in our adult lives to better ourselves. This is what I am currently doing in Blackpool and Fylde College. I am one of the oldest in my class and at first, I was concerned that I would feel out of place, because the majority of students would be considerably younger than me. However, regardless of age or background, we are all there to learn, and that’s what matters. My Tutor, Michelle, is a Christian and from a spiritual and educational perspective for me, this is a great encouragement. The experience has been so positive, that I would certainly encourage all mature people who may wish to return to education, to go for it!

The Bible certainly encourages people to be educated, and three passages come to mind:

Proverbs 18:15:

“An intelligent heart requires knowledge and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge”.

Proverbs 1:5:

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning and the one who understands obtains guidance”.

Proverbs 16:16:

“How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver”.

Of course, many people in the UK and the wider world do have access to education. In the UK, many youngsters drop out of education for various reasons. Dysfunctional families, poverty, single-parent families etc, are many reasons why youngsters drop out of education. That said, many children go from state schools to college/university and go on to have successful careers.

What would Christ’s education have looked like? Jesus, like many Jews today would have received an edcuation around Old Testsment Scriptures. So as a boy, teenager and young man, Christ would have been very familiar with what we call The Old Testament. Jesus of course, as God in human form, would have known the scriptures – after all, He authored them! So while it is important to get a worldy education, knowledge of the Lord is more paramount.

To know the Lrod and His ways, you do not need to go to Bible college unless you have a calling to! The Lord will educate you in His ways as you build a spritual relationship with him. Reading the Bible, is also an education in all apsects of life and Jesus should always be our Tutor, in such matters. Being among other believers and attending the Lord’s church is often key to growing in the Lord and serving others, while receiving godly instruction and encouragement.

May we all be true disciples of Christ and students of Him.

God bless you.
